Trogir Day Trip from Split — The Complete Guide (2026)
Why Trogir Deserves a Day of Your Time
Trogir is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe — a small island city connected to the mainland by a short bridge, with a UNESCO-listed old town that has been continuously inhabited for over 2,300 years. It's 30 minutes from Split by bus or car, and most visitors who go wish they'd gone sooner.
Unlike Split, which is a large and busy city, Trogir is compact and walkable — you can see the entire old town in 2-3 hours. The pace is slower, the streets are quieter, and the architecture is extraordinary.
How to Get from Split to Trogir
By Bus (Cheapest and Easiest)
Bus number 37 runs from Split bus station (Autobusni kolodvor) directly to Trogir every 20-30 minutes throughout the day. Journey time is about 45 minutes. Cost is around €2-3 each way.
This is the easiest option — no need to navigate, no parking, direct route. Buy tickets on the bus or at the station.
By Car (Most Flexible)
Drive from Split city centre takes about 30 minutes on the coastal road (D8) — longer if you hit traffic near the airport. Parking in Trogir is available just outside the old town (the island has very limited parking).
Having a car lets you stop at Kaštela — a string of small coastal towns between Split and Trogir with castle ruins, seafood restaurants, and almost no tourists. Worth 30 minutes if you have time.
By Boat Tour
Several operators run half-day boat tours from Split that include Trogir and the Blue Lagoon. A good option if you want to combine the two and see Trogir from the sea first.
What to See and Do in Trogir
Cathedral of St Lawrence
The centrepiece of Trogir's old town — a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral that took 300 years to build (13th-16th century). The portal by Master Radovan (1240) is one of the finest examples of Romanesque sculpture in Croatia and worth studying in detail — every figure tells a story from medieval Christian and secular life.
Climb the bell tower for views over the rooftops and the surrounding islands. Entry to the cathedral and tower costs around €5.
Kamerlengo Fortress
A 15th-century Venetian fortress at the western tip of the island with views over the sea and the town. In summer it hosts open-air concerts and film screenings. Worth walking around the outside even if you don't go in.
The Old Town Streets
Trogir's old town is small enough that getting lost is impossible — and enjoyable. The main street (Gradska ulica) runs through the centre, but the back streets are where the atmosphere is. Look for the loggia (open-air gallery), the town hall, and the various church facades that appear around every corner.
Lunch by the Water
Trogir's waterfront restaurants are significantly better value than Split's tourist areas. Fresh fish, octopus salad, grilled vegetables with local olive oil — Dalmatian food done simply and well. Sit facing the mainland with a glass of local white wine and you'll understand why people spend their whole lives on this coast.
Combining Trogir with Other Stops
Trogir pairs naturally with a few other stops on the same day trip from Split:
Kaštela — the string of small towns along the coast between Split and Trogir. Castle ruins, quiet beaches, local wine. Add 1-2 hours if you have a car.
Blue Lagoon (Drvenik Mali) — a shallow, bright-turquoise bay about 30 minutes by boat from Trogir. Several boat tours combine Trogir and the Blue Lagoon in a half-day trip.
Quad tours from Trogir — Quad Adventures Trogir offers ATV tours through the countryside around Trogir, including Kaštela and the coast. A completely different way to see the area. Adriatic Pass discount available. See the offer →
