Split in September — Is It Worth It? (Honest 2026 Guide)
The Short Answer
Yes — September in Split is genuinely excellent, and in many ways better than July and August. Here's the honest breakdown.
Weather in Split in September
September is one of the best months for weather on the Dalmatian coast. Average temperatures are 24-27°C — warm enough to swim and sunbathe, cool enough to walk around the city without melting.
The sea temperature in September is actually warmer than in June — the Adriatic accumulates heat through July and August and the water peaks in late August and September. Swimming in September feels like getting into a warm bath.
Rain becomes slightly more likely from mid-September onward, but summer-style weather typically holds until the end of the month. The odd thunderstorm can appear in the evenings — dramatic to watch, usually passing quickly.
Crowds in September
The first week of September still has significant tourist presence — the tail end of European summer holidays. From around 10 September onward, the crowds drop noticeably. By late September, you can walk through Diocletian's Palace without being shoulder-to-shoulder with other tourists.
The beaches have space. The restaurants can seat you without a reservation. The ferries to the islands have room. This alone makes September worth considering.
Prices in September
Accommodation prices drop significantly after the first week of September — typically 20-40% less than peak July prices. Flights are cheaper. Car rentals are available without booking months ahead.
Restaurant prices don't change (they're not seasonal) but the overall cost of a week in Split in September is meaningfully less than in August.
What's Still Open in September
Everything that matters is fully open in September:
✅ All boat tours — Blue Cave, Hvar, private charters — running daily
✅ All island ferries — full summer schedule through September
✅ All restaurants and bars
✅ All beaches — sea temperature at its warmest
✅ All experiences — rafting, ATV, photography, VR tours
✅ Adriatic Pass partners — all active through September
⚠️ Some beach clubs reduce hours from mid-September
⚠️ Some boat party events wind down after the first week
What's Better in September vs Summer
Diocletian's Palace — in July you're part of a crowd. In late September you can stand on the Peristyle and actually look at it.
Marjan Hill — the light in September is golden and softer than summer. The best photography of Split happens in September.
Island day trips — Hvar, Brač, and the Blue Cave tour are all operating but significantly less crowded. The Blue Cave queue in September is much shorter than August.
Restaurants — the kitchens are less rushed, the service is more attentive, the experience is better.
Locals — Split's own population returns to its rhythms in September. The city feels more like itself and less like a resort.
What's Better in July/August vs September
Nightlife — the boat parties, the outdoor clubs, the full summer energy peaks in July and August. September is quieter after dark.
Beach atmosphere — if you want a lively, social beach scene, peak season delivers more of it.
Events — Split Summer Festival and other cultural events are mostly July/August affairs.
The Verdict
If you have flexibility, September is the best month to visit Split. Better weather for sightseeing (not too hot), warmer sea for swimming, fewer crowds, lower prices, and a city that has recovered its own personality after the intensity of August.
The only reason to choose July or August over September is if you specifically want the peak summer social scene — beach clubs at full energy, boat parties every night, the full Hvar Town experience.
For everyone else: September. Go in September.
