Plitvice Lakes from Split: Day Trip Guide (2026) — Is It Worth It?

Can You Do Plitvice Lakes as a Day Trip from Split?

Yes — but it's a long day. Plitvice Lakes National Park is about 240km from Split, which translates to roughly 2.5 hours each way by car or private transfer. Add 4-5 hours in the park itself and you're looking at a 10-12 hour day total. It's doable, and most people who do it say it's worth it — but go in knowing it won't be a relaxed day.

The alternative is to stay overnight near the park and take two days. That's the better option if you're not on a tight schedule. But for most visitors coming from Split on a one-week trip, a full-day excursion is the realistic choice.

What Makes Plitvice Worth the Drive

Plitvice Lakes is 16 terraced lakes connected by waterfalls and cascades, set in a forested canyon. The water colour — ranging from turquoise to emerald to deep blue depending on the light and the season — is the result of specific mineral concentrations in the limestone, and it's genuinely extraordinary. Photos don't prepare you for it.

The park covers 300 square kilometres. You explore it on wooden boardwalks that run directly over the water and through the canyon. The main route takes 3-4 hours at a comfortable pace. The highlights are Veliki Slap (Croatia's highest waterfall at 78 metres), the Lower Lakes (the most densely packed cascade section), and the upper lakes where the landscape opens into forest and meadow.

Croatia gets 2 million visitors a year. Plitvice is the single most popular attraction in the country. In July and August, arrive early — the car parks and entrance queues get crowded by 9am.

Private Tour vs. Shared Bus vs. Self-Drive

Self-drive: Renting a car and driving yourself is the most flexible option. You leave when you want, stop where you want, and can combine Plitvice with other stops (Rastoke — a small village of waterfalls — is 15 minutes from Plitvice and worth a stop). Cost: car rental from ~€50/day plus fuel and park entrance (~€40 per person in peak season).

Shared bus tour: Cheaper, but you're on someone else's schedule — fixed departure, fixed time in the park, fixed return. Usually 8-9 hours total with 3-4 hours in the park. Cost: ~€50-70 per person.

Private tour: The most comfortable option for couples or small groups. A private guide, air-conditioned vehicle, hotel pick-up, and your own pace in the park. The park entrance ticket is included. It's more expensive but splits well across a group. The Tour4You private Plitvice tour includes everything — transfer, guide, and entrance. Cost: from €380/group with 15% off via Adriatic Pass. Plitvice vs. Krka — Which to Choose from Split?

This is the most common question for visitors based in Split. Quick answer: Plitvice is more spectacular but further; Krka is easier to reach and pairs well with Split as a day trip.

If you only have one day for a national park, choose based on your priorities. If you want the most dramatic scenery and you're prepared for a full-day commitment, Plitvice. If you want waterfalls with less travel time and the option to add wine tasting, Krka. See our full comparison →

Practical Tips

Book entrance tickets in advance in July and August — the park uses timed entry slots and sells out. Book online at np-plitvicka-jezera.hr at least a week ahead in peak season.

Wear comfortable shoes — the boardwalks are mostly flat but the upper lakes section involves some uneven terrain. Trainers are fine; flip-flops are not.

Bring water and snacks — the park has restaurants but they're expensive and crowded at lunchtime.

Best months: May-June and September-October. The park is quieter, the light is better for photography, and the waterfalls are at full flow after spring rains or autumn moisture.
